WoW 152: On reframing

Words of Wisdom

Idea

When considering a challenge or solving a problem, one of the most important things you can do is identify what problem you are trying to solve. Often we don’t think carefully or curiously enough about what we are working on, our personal challenges, or what we want to see changed.

Reframing is a way of thinking and asking questions about what problem you are trying to solve. To reframe, simply ask, “What are other ways to look at this?”

You can reframe by zooming into the details.

You can reframe by zooming out and thinking more high level.

You can reframe by considering different stakeholders' perspectives.

You can reframe by imagining the problem in a completely different context.

You can reframe by asking what assumptions you're making.

You can reframe by exploring the opposite of your current view.

You can reframe by examining the problem through different time horizons.

You can reframe by assuming the best about someone.

Resource

Here is a helpful article from HBR on the skill of reframing when problem solving in business: Are You Solving the Right Problems? It applies to personal and social problems as well. Reading time is about 22-25 minutes. Longer if you want to really reflect on a problem you are solving, which is where the magic is.

Questions

What category of problem is this? What are other possible categories or ways of describing the problem?

Who am I most thinking of serving when I’m thinking of solving this problem? Is that helping? Who else could I serve when solving this problem?

What’s the goal or objective here? What are other possible objectives?

How can I assume the best about this person’s intentions?

Prayer

“God, everything and everyone is laid bare before you. You are all seeing and all knowing. You alone know what is true. Help me to see myself, my situation, and others more clearly. Give me eyes to see. Help me to learn to reframe so that I can take captive distorted thoughts of fear, judgment, and despair. Help me to surrender what I cannot control to you, and rest in You.”

Live wisely,

Josh
